Some sessions exist purely to give the head a break. This one was exactly that — a park wall, summer heat, two hours, no pressure. NEAR is another name in the same hand as TASH: a different tag for a different mood, the way writers sometimes separate their work by context rather than style.

The year was 2014. New letterform, new shadow logic, the kind of session where the goal is a question rather than a result.

Chrome vs grey — why the pigment is not the colour

The most common beginner mistake with chrome graffiti is reaching for grey paint. It looks close enough on the shelf. On the wall it reads as flat, dull and wrong — and the reason is not the shade, it's the chemistry.

Chrome spray paint contains metallic aluminium flakes suspended in the formula. These flakes align parallel to the surface when the paint dries and act as tiny mirrors — reflecting light rather than absorbing it. That's what makes chrome read as chrome: not a colour, but a behaviour. The surface responds to light the way metal does. Grey paint has no metallic pigment. It absorbs light evenly across its surface and reads as a colour. Chrome reflects it unevenly and reads as a material.

This distinction matters for every decision in a chrome piece. The shadows and highlights aren't about value — they're about simulating how light moves across a reflective curved surface. A dark shadow on chrome isn't a dark colour sitting next to a light colour. It's the simulation of a curved plane turning away from the light source, which on real chrome would show a reflection of the ground or the dark area behind the object. Understanding this changes how you plan the piece before the first cap goes on the wall.

Liquid mirror chrome — products like Molotow Liquid Chrome marker — takes this further: the metallic flake density is high enough to produce a near-perfect mirror finish on smooth surfaces. The effect is striking but requires a non-porous base and a very different application technique from spray. For wall work, aerosol chrome remains the practical tool. For detail work and smaller surfaces, liquid chrome opens different possibilities.

Hollow style — why experienced writers go back to empty letters

Before the chrome fill goes on, the letter has to work without it. This sounds obvious. It isn't.

Advanced writers periodically return to hollow style — letters drawn with outline only, no fill, no colour — specifically to check whether their letter structure has gotten sloppy under the cover of effects. A chrome fill, a chromatic shadow system, forcefield extensions — all of these add visual complexity that can mask weak letterforms. Remove them and what remains is the skeleton. If the skeleton is weak, no amount of fill recovers it.

In London graffiti culture, a straight letter piece done in silver chrome and black is called a dub. Speed and cleanliness. Maximum impact with minimum elements. A dub is a stress test for letterform in the same way that hollow style is — there's nowhere to hide, and writers who can produce a clean dub under time pressure have letter fundamentals that hold up under anything.

The NEAR piece from 2014 used a more angular letterform than earlier work — tighter internal geometry, planes rather than curves in the main body of each letter. The reason is partly aesthetic and partly practical: angular letters divide the chrome surface into readable flat planes, which makes highlight placement a decision rather than a guess. Curved letters require more judgment about where exactly the reflection would fall on a continuously changing surface. Flat planes catch light predictably. The letter becomes easier to read as metal.

How to read reflections on metal — a practical reference

Chrome effects require more precision than standard fills because you're simulating how light bends across curved metal. The technique can be learned from observation — and the reference material is everywhere.

Look at a chrome bumper, a stainless steel kettle, a door handle. Notice how the reflection doesn't distribute evenly: the brightest point is small and specific, where the surface faces the light source most directly. Adjacent to that bright point the tone drops quickly. The darkest areas are where the surface curves away from the light and faces downward — on a real chrome object this area often reflects the ground or a dark element of the environment, which is why chrome shadows can carry colour rather than just darkness.

On a letter, the same logic applies. The highest point of a curved letter surface — the area that would face a light source positioned above and to one side — gets the white highlight. The areas that curve away get the shadow. The difference between a chrome piece that reads as metallic and one that reads as painted grey is whether these zones are placed correctly relative to a consistent light source. The most common mistake is inconsistent light direction — highlights and shadows that don't agree on where the source is. When this happens, the illusion breaks and the letter reads as flat regardless of how much metallic paint is on it.

For the NEAR piece, the light source was positioned above. The white highlights sit at the top of each letter's main surface. The shadow zones deepen where the letterform turns away from above. This consistency is what makes the chrome read as chrome rather than grey from a distance.

The shadow experiment — filling between the letters

Standard graffiti shadow logic places the shadow outside the letter boundary — below and to one side, following a vanishing point that applies consistently across the whole word. View the piece as one coherent shape and draw the shadows accordingly — the shadow of each letter shouldn't appear in front of the next letter.

This piece broke that logic intentionally. Instead of shadows cast outward, the shadow became a solid fill in the negative space between the letters — the gaps, the intervals, the areas that standard production leaves as background. Bright green, fully saturated, running through the spaces between and inside the chrome letters rather than projecting from their edges.

In wildstyle, forced shadows fill the gaps between interlocking forms — the fill has to read correctly across all the overlapping structures. This piece borrowed that logic and applied it to a chrome format: the shadow lives between the letters rather than behind them, pushing the chrome forward by contrast rather than by conventional shading.

The result: the chrome reads brighter because the green shadow behind it is saturated rather than dark. Conventional dark shadows make chrome recede slightly at the edges. A saturated colour makes the silver pop harder — the warm metallic and the cool green create contrast that works differently from the standard chrome-and-black combination.

Details that complete the piece

Several details complete the piece. Light violet drips run down from the top of the letters — applied with a skinny cap, they follow the letterform rather than falling randomly, suggesting paint accumulated at the upper edges and beginning to move. White highlights and white drips define the highest points of the chrome surface — where direct light would hit curved metal. Pink drips add a warmer accent alongside the white, and the entry into the letter A from above carries a pink outline that separates it from the chrome fill. Below the letters E and A, green shadow bleeds out from underneath — not contained within the letter boundary but spilling onto the background, as if the colour between the letters has weight and is slowly spreading outward.

Dub, burner, chrome piece — how the culture names these formats

Chrome graffiti exists across several formats and the culture has specific names for each.

A dub is a straight letter chrome piece — silver fill, black outline, clean and fast. The name comes from London graffiti culture and implies speed and directness. No background, no complex fills, no forcefield. Just the letters and the chrome doing the work.

A chrome burner adds complexity: black background, chromatic shadow system, forcefield extensions from the outline, highlights built in multiple passes. The burner is the full production version of chrome — slower, more considered, everything the dub deliberately leaves out.

A chrome piece without a background — like the 2010 TASH session — sits between the two. Chrome fill, detailed outline, but no background roll. The wall surface becomes part of the composition.

The NEAR piece from 2014 sits in its own position: chrome fill with a non-standard shadow approach that replaces the conventional dark tones with a saturated green fill between the letters. It uses the speed logic of a dub — no complex background, two hours total — but applies a fill experiment that belongs to more considered production work. Format and experiment in the same session.

Two hours — what that means as a constraint

Two hours for a chrome piece with a new letterform and a non-standard shadow approach is a real constraint. Not impossible — chrome covers fast, and a single saturated colour filling the negative space takes less time than building a chromatic gradient.

When time is chosen rather than imposed, you use it differently. The pressure of a deadline pushes toward what you know will work. A chosen two hours pushes toward what you want to figure out. This session was about the shadow between the letters — whether green fills the negative space the way dark tones fill shadow zones, and what that does to the chrome above it.
