The previous chrome piece had no background and no plan — just ninety minutes on a wall that happened to be there. This one was different. Same year, different surface: an abandoned car park in the city, summer heat, alone with a roller and a bag of cans. The black enamel went down first. Then the chrome. Then everything that came after.
A burner is a graffiti image that outshines everything else around it. That's the working definition — and it sets the bar not just for the visual result but for the decision-making that gets you there. Every element has to earn its place: the fill, the shadows, the outline, the extensions that push out from the letter edge into the background. This was the session where those decisions started to stack up properly.
What makes a graffiti chrome burner
Most pieces have a fill and an outline. A burner has a fill, a shadow system, a highlight system, an outline, and forcefields — the extensions that push out from the letter edge into the background. Forcefields add much-needed size and a fresh graphic gradient effect, like a monochromatic rainbow pushing away from the letter. Remove any one of those layers and the piece drops a level. All of them together, executed with control, is what makes it burn.
Chrome is a demanding base for this format. But fast coverage is only the starting point. A chrome burner isn't fast to paint. The fill goes on fast. Everything after it — the shadow work, the highlights, the forcefield — is slow, deliberate, layer by layer.
The shadow technique — chromatic layering
This is the part of the piece I worked hardest on, and the part that separates this session from the earlier chrome work.
Standard graffiti shadow work uses one dark colour — black or a dark version of the fill — applied in a single pass to indicate where the letter surface turns away from the light. It works. It's also flat. The shadows read as absence of light rather than as colour.
What happened here was different: multiple colours sprayed one on top of the other, mixed wet on wet directly on the wall, until the transition read as even. The accent colours were light blue, magenta and yellow — with black added to deepen and white and light grey to soften. Not blended mechanically, but built up pass by pass until the gradient felt right.
The result is what you might call chromatic shadows — shadows that carry colour temperature rather than just value. The eye reads them not as darkness but as reflected colour, which gives the letter interior a sense of internal complexity that a single-colour shadow can't produce. It's closer to how light actually behaves on a reflective metallic surface than the standard approach.
Perspective in the shadows — building depth inside the letter
Beyond the colour, the shadows here were built with perspective in mind. The dark areas don't sit randomly inside the letter — they converge toward a vanishing point, the same logic a draughtsman uses when drawing a three-dimensional object. Where two planes of the letter meet and turn away from the viewer, the black spray deepens the crease. Where a surface faces toward the implied light source, the lighter tones and white spray open it up.
The thin crack lines inside the letters follow the same perspective logic. They're not decorative marks — they indicate where the letter surface would break if it were a real material object, running along the form rather than across it.
The forcefield extensions — what comes out of the outline
The magenta outline doesn't just contain the letter here — it generates. From the outer edge of the magenta, four colours push outward into the black background: pink, yellow, light blue, green. Not lightning in the literal sense — extensions, directional shapes that follow the energy of the letter edge rather than a predetermined pattern.
The sequence matters: from a dark outline, the forcefield runs lightest nearest the outline and progressively lighter moving outward. This gradient effect pushes the letter visually away from the background. Here the magenta is the anchor and the extensions carry the colour outward in four directions, giving the piece a sense of motion and size beyond the letter boundary.
White spray on the black background between the letters adds another layer — a soft glow that separates the letter from the wall and suggests reflected light bouncing off the chrome fill.
Painting in heat — the 3M respirator problem
It was plus twenty-five that day. The abandoned car park had no shade. The 3M respirator — the correct tool, the one that actually filters organic vapors — becomes a different experience at that temperature. Breathing through activated carbon filters in direct sun is work. The seal against the face holds heat. The temptation to remove it, even briefly, is real.
It stayed on. The nitro outline and the chrome fill both off-gas heavily, and an abandoned urban surface with no ventilation in summer heat is exactly the situation the respirator exists for. But it's worth knowing, before you paint in those conditions, that the physical effort of a long session increases significantly when every breath goes through a filter. Plan for breaks. Drink water. The mask comes off when you're away from the wall, not while you're painting.

Letterform, heat and what the session showed
The letterform shifted here too. The A became more legible — in earlier work the A was inverted, harder to read for anyone outside the culture. A more conventional A reads faster and wider, which matters when the piece is on a wall that strangers pass. The T didn't work — the curve at the top wasn't right and I knew it while painting it. That's part of the record.
What did work: the shadow system, the perspective in the cracks, the forcefield extensions pulling colour into the black. The piece is more considered than the previous chrome work. It took longer, it went further, and the heat made every additional layer a decision rather than a habit.
