Not every graffiti session happens outside. This one was in an apartment — a room turned into a surface, cans of MTN 94, a commission that required working indoors rather than on a park wall. The result was good. The aftermath was not what anyone fully anticipated.
This post is partly about that session and partly a practical guide to what spray paint actually does inside a closed space — and what you need to know before you open the first can.
What MTN 94 does inside a room
MTN 94 is a high-pressure, fast-drying spray paint built for outdoor use. On a park wall in open air, the overspray disperses immediately. In a closed apartment, it has nowhere to go.
The first thing you notice is the pigment dust. Spray paint fumes and particles, if not ventilated properly, can irritate the skin, nose, throat and lungs — and prolonged exposure causes headaches, nausea, hunger and fatigue. But the less discussed problem is the physical dust from the pigment itself. After this session, fine paint particles had settled on every surface in the room — and through closed doors, through the gaps around door frames, into adjacent rooms as well. Doors don't seal. The dust moves.
This is not unique to MTN 94. Any high-pigment, high-pressure spray paint will do this indoors. The difference is that MTN 94 is formulated for speed and coverage — qualities that work for outdoor production but create a much larger particle cloud inside a confined space.
Ventilation — the only thing that actually helps
Ventilation is the single most critical factor for safe indoor spray painting. Spray paints release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can cause headaches, dizziness and respiratory issues. Ensure windows and doors are fully open and use fans to increase airflow.
The practical setup for an indoor graffiti session: windows fully open before the first can opens and kept open throughout. A fan positioned to push air toward the window rather than just circulate it — the goal is extraction, not movement. If the room has two windows on opposite walls, cross ventilation is significantly better than a single open window.
Breaks are mandatory, not optional. Every thirty to forty minutes, step outside completely. Not just into the hallway — outside. Let the room clear. Return when the air has moved.
The respirator question — and why your standard mask may not be enough
The standard half-mask respirator with OV/P100 cartridges — the setup covered in the 3M respirator guide — is designed for outdoor sessions where ventilation is ambient. Indoors, the concentration of organic vapors is higher and the exposure time per unit of air is longer because the same air circulates rather than disperses.
For frequent indoor spray painting sessions, a full-face respirator provides more comprehensive protection. The 3M 6900 series uses the same OV/P100 cartridge system as the half-masks but covers the eyes as well. For a one-off indoor session, a half-mask with fresh cartridges and proper ventilation is workable. For repeated indoor work, the full-face is the correct tool.
The feeling that the standard mask isn't providing enough protection indoors is accurate. It isn't a fit problem or a cartridge problem — it's a concentration problem. The cartridges saturate faster in high-VOC environments. If you're painting indoors for more than an hour, check the cartridges when you take your break. If you can smell anything through the mask, replace them before continuing.
Eye protection indoors
Outdoors, overspray disperses fast enough that eye irritation from paint particles is manageable with standard awareness. Indoors, the particle density is higher and the particles stay airborne longer before settling.
Safety goggles protect eyes from overspray. Gloves prevent skin irritation. For indoor graffiti specifically, safety goggles are not optional. The combination of high-pressure MTN 94 in a confined space produces enough airborne particulate that eye irritation is likely without protection. A lower-face respirator paired with goggles is the minimum for indoor spray paint work.
Protecting the space — what to cover and why
Spray paint sprays. Overspray will reach furniture, floors and surfaces you didn't intend to paint. Covering the area with drop cloths or plastic sheeting and moving electronics out of the room before you start is not optional preparation — it's the difference between a session that leaves one surface painted and a session that leaves the whole room repainted.
For an indoor graffiti session on a wall, the practical preparation: floor completely covered with drop cloths or plastic sheeting, taped down at the edges. Furniture removed from the room entirely — not just the pieces near the wall, but everything. Door gaps sealed with tape or a damp towel pressed along the bottom — it won't stop everything but it significantly slows the migration of dust. Electronics out. Light fittings covered if they're close to the work area.
The dust that settled throughout the apartment after this session came primarily through door gaps. Taping those gaps before starting would have contained most of it to the working room.
After the session — clearing the air and cleaning up
After an indoor graffiti session, keep windows open for at least two to three hours after finishing — not just until the smell seems gone. VOCs dissipate slowly and the smell is not an accurate indicator of air quality.
Wash hands and exposed skin immediately. If you were working without full-face protection, wash your face and consider a shower before the paint residue on your skin has time to absorb further. The pigment dust that has settled on surfaces should be wiped with a damp cloth — dry wiping will resuspend it into the air.
An air purifier with an activated carbon filter running in the room after the session helps clear residual VOCs faster than ventilation alone.
Indoor graffiti — when it makes sense and when it doesn't
An indoor session makes sense when the brief requires it — a commissioned mural inside a space, a room being decorated, a situation where outdoor access isn't available. It requires more preparation, more protective equipment and more discipline about ventilation than outdoor work.
A single well-prepared session is one thing. Making it a habit without proper ventilation and protection is another.
