YASHYN — Halo over Weathered Ground

YASHYN is an original graffiti lettering piece on paper, built in paint, markers and liners. The six letters are cut into sharp, angular planes and locked together in one long horizontal block, held by a continuous crimson outline.

The dark fills are laid in markers of different transparency, so the black deepens where layers overlap and thins where they don't. Patches of green and grey-blue are brushed in with an Italian paint made to recreate the surface of old, weathered walls: matte, uneven, a little worn. Silver POSCA marker picks out the planes where the letter contours cross, and a fine gold metallic liner traces edges and facets, so the surface changes as the viewer moves.

Above the word floats a deep reddish-brown ring, a halo, with gold running from it in drips. Below, the same reddish brown rises from the bottom edge of the sheet in translucent siloxane paint, a dense speckled texture that breaks up into the white of the paper and gives the letters ground to stand on.

The work comes from graffiti writing, where pieces are planned on paper before they reach a wall. Here the paper is treated like the wall itself, built with paint, drips and texture, and finished as graffiti art on paper in its own right. Signed and dated in gold, upper right.
