TASH — Hatched Light, Silver Shadow
TASH is an original graffiti lettering drawing on paper. The word is written in two rows, TA over SH, as in its companion, and drawn here with far less fill. The letters open into thin ribbons and blade-like planes, and much of the sheet is left as white paper, so the structure of the letters carries the drawing.
The black liner does the main work. It draws the contours, and it builds the shadow sides of the letters from dense rows of parallel hatching that read almost as black stripes against the white. Thin free lines in red pencil, sharpened in places with fine red ballpoint, run across the composition and tie the separate forms together.
Caran d'Ache Museum Aquarelle pencils, used dry, add a restrained palette of sage green, warm ochre and red, laid in soft layers inside the planes. A single small accent of semi-transparent violet marker sits in the upper right. In the centre, inside the letter A, a silver POSCA marker forms the shadow. It is the only reflective surface on the sheet, so it catches the light differently from everything around it.
The drawing is held inside a hard rectangular border, but in the lower right a stippled band of beige and brown enamel, slightly diluted with water, breaks through it and runs out onto the white margin, with one red line following it to the edge of the paper. The work is signed "Tash!" in red near the centre and dated by hand, 6.03.26, below.
With less colour, the drawing shows the construction of graffiti letters more openly: where the shadow falls, how one stroke overlaps another, how a letter turns in space. Hung next to TASH — Crimson Current, the two sheets show one word resolved in two ways, one dense and layered, the other open and graphic. On its own, it is graffiti art on paper with the clarity of a technical drawing.
A companion to TASH — Crimson Current, made the day before on the same logic.
